A playable two faced tambora drum. Each side has a different image, depicting extra-terrestrial beings with Caribbean motifs. Pambiche is a Merengue subgenre said to have come from seeing Americanized versions of traditional Dominican Merengue during the US occupation of the island. [1916-1928/1965-1966] during political turmoil under the guise of quelling the ‘threat of Communism’ after the death of President Ramón Cáceres. Pambiche is a transfiguration referencing Palm Beach, Florida. A rhythm shrouded in folklore, musical mythologies, and violent systemic erasure resulted from a US-backed Trujillo regime, its true origins of cultural exchange between Haitians and Dominicans along the fuzzy border of both countries often lost in the crossfire. The respecting of this history now more important than ever with threat of US occupation again in the DR and the government’s treatment of their neighbors. This work is a reminder of how we existed as one, before someone drew lines in the sand.
